this just happened

they pushed a slip of paper under my door
24 HOURS NOTICE it said
something about the pipes
something about strange men
rummaging through my apartment
climbing under my sink
makes me wonder what they looked at
what drawers they might have opened
even i would have been tempted
even i would have touched one small thing
but they said
DO NOT TURN ON THE WATER IN THE KITCHEN PLEASE
And i did
a couple times
because i forgot
tonight i decided to do my dishes
i had lots of dishes
i made macaroni and cheese
fancy style
2 nights in a row
and there was homemade bread
and zucchini fritters
i had tater tots too at some point
and i just couldnt resist
i had to do those dishes
no one will know
how much water could it be
hum hum hum
splash splash splash
bubbles bubbles bubbles
my phone rings

no i said, it's as dry as can be
well there's a whole bunch of water
dripping in the garage below your apartment
there's a whole bunch of it
it runs clear out to 12th street
oh dear i said
i DID forget for a second
i filled up my tea kettle
oh it couldnt have been from that he said
have a good evening
my dishes look so clean
and sparkly in their drying rack
how much water could it be?
no one will ever know
